Is it better to have a blank world map on your wall? Or one with pins of all the places you’ve visited?
I had an interesting conversation with a friend of mine the other day about this. In my opinion, I like to put a mark on the places I’ve been. I’ve had a very large, old and crusty world map in the bedroom of my parents house since I was ten years old. Every time I return from somewhere new I mark it with a sharpie on my map. I don’t really know why I do it, but I do.
I was at my friend Jackie’s house the other day and I noticed she had a similar map plastered to the main wall of her room and I asked her, “why don’t you mark all the places that you’ve been? I know you’ve been to almost every country in the Mediterranean, not to mention all the places you’ve traveled to here in the U.S.” Her reply was, “I don’t like to dwell on the places I’ve been. I’d rather look at the whole world as it is without my mark on it, because it’s more awe inspiring.”
